Joyce Upshaw
Mother of Dr. Erica L. Givner/Front Office Coordinator
Born and raised in Pittsburgh’s historic Hill District, I am a proud mother of three wonderful daughters and the joyful grandmother of nine and a half grandchildren. For four years, I embraced the role of a military wife, an experience that strengthened my resilience and deepened my faith. I am a devoted member of Mt. Ararat Baptist Church.
I dedicated 13 years to the Pittsburgh Public Schools before my health required me to step away. Throughout my career, I also served at Sojourner House, Whale’s Tales, Strength Inc., and First Step Recovery House—work that allowed me to support individuals and families during some of their most challenging moments.
I hold an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts, along with certificates in Drug and Alcohol Counseling and Intervention on Families. I am deeply committed to my own healing journey and have invested 25+ years into my personal recovery.
Outside of my professional and spiritual life, I find joy in dancing, singing, and skating—expressions of the energy, gratitude, and love I carry with me each day.
